Atelier : prévenir les accidents de plate-forme avec une nouvelle solution
At RailTech Europe on March 6-7, several free workshops will be offered, which we will highlight in this series of articles. This workshop will focus on improving the safety of railway stations at the level of automated metro systems, without interfering with station operations, using « Rope » type platform screen doors (RSD).
In the fast-paced world of urban transportation, safety remains a top priority. The RSD (Rope-type Platform Screen Doors) system is a solution designed to prevent platform accidents and unauthorized track access. This intelligent passenger safety system uses automated vertical movement of high-span lightweight cable panels, combined with zone control sensors, ensuring seamless installation without disrupting station operations or train services.
This technology has been successfully tested under metro operating conditions in Stockholm and Tokyo. The RSD system has been operating regularly in the Sofia Metro (Bulgaria) for more than three years and has a reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS) rate of 99.996%.
A Korean invention
The driving force behind this innovative system is ATCO TRADE, an engineering and trading company with over 22 years of experience in the electric transportation sector. The company led a Bulgarian-Korean consortium that designed and installed the technology under the RSD brand in the Sofia Metro to successfully address a specific safety issue related to the use of cable partitions at long range moving vertically.
To delve deeper into the intricacies of this system, a workshop will be organized during RailTech Europe 2024, under the direction of Velislav Atmadjov. Employed by the Bulgarian company ATCO TRADE, he participated in the installation phase of the Sofia Metro RSD project and studies international business at the Avans University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. « The workshop is particularly interesting for station designers, public passenger rail transport operators and passenger safety experts. Participants will discover how the RSD system can elevate passenger experience and safety to the systems level automated metro systems without disrupting the operation of stations,” says Mr. Atmadjov.
